Summer Escape Guide

Welcome...
Escape to the magical world of summer camp. We appreciate your interest in Timber Ridge Camp. While this is an important time for us to evaluate you, we want you to ask questions of us. Our goal is simple -- to offer our campers and counselors the most rewarding, fun and exciting summer we can. Since 1955 we have done this. Explore us today, one of our nation's finest summer camps, as we forge ahead in offering the very best, safest and most exciting summer programs available.

Timber Ridge consists of one 7 week session and two 3 ½ half sessions. All are coed and all feature extensive athletic, performing arts, gymnastics and horseback riding programs, as well as waterfront, circus, and pioneering curriculums. Timber Ridge lies along the banks of the fabled Cacapon River in the Shenandoah Mountains in West Virginia.

Philosophy...
Our philosophy involves allowing children to interact with each other in a safe, positive environment while learning new sills in different activities. We want children to learn to respect each other and their belongings and to learn the skills they need to be away from home for a period of time. Our counselors are central to the success of this philosophy. They are the summer mothers and fathers in the cabin and their attitude and motivation determine what kind of summer experience our campers will enjoy. Our counselors are role models for our compares. Accordingly, because of the nature of this relationship, we do not allow drugs or alcohol in camp at any time. Cigarette smoking is also prohibited within the camp grounds. We feel that there is no place for these activities within the wholesome atmosphere of camp.

Where do the campers and counselors come from?
Our campers and counselors are from all over the world. We have an international flavor and select staff from coast-to-coast and throughout Europe as well. We feel it is important to offer this diversity and find that summer relationships often turn into long-standing friendships and lifelong memories.

Will I be an activity specialist or a cabin counselor?
Counselors have dual roles -- instructing an activity and living in a cabin. Our specialty area leaders come to us with a great deal of expertise. The waterfront, tennis, athletic and riding programs are all headed by experts in their respective fields. Soccer is taught by British coaches, drama is taught by outstanding actors and actresses from various backgrounds, tripping outings are led by accomplished backpackers, hikers and canoeists. While our specialists provide the necessary foundation in which we build campers' skills, we also employ general counselors whose positions we value equally. They are especially essential to our younger groups, where the general counselor is the backbone of the unit.

Do the counselors live with the campers?
Except for a select number of specialists, all counselors live in cabins with our campers. At each of our camps, the camper- counselor ratio is 4:1.

How about salary and time off?
While each camp has its own time-off policies, a high emphasis is placed on free time. We offer plenty of time for each staff member to recharge their batteries. It is necessary for an effective counselor to relax and explore the beautiful surroundings or simply enjoy the outstanding facilities right on camp grounds. We also offer well-organized staff recreation programs. Salary guidelines are commensurate with age, experience and prior involvement with children. Our salaries are among the most competitive in the field. In addition to your salary, laundry service is provided free of charge and a handsome travel allowance may be included, if applicable.

Can I earn college credit?
Definitely. Many of our staff receive credit for working at camp when it coincides with college programs. Our directors will be more than happy to assist you with this, but it is advisable to contact your guidance department or Dean's office for more information.

What do I do now?
Now that we've introduced you briefly, we invite you to submit an application for employment with us. After we have received your application, we will contact you for a personal interview. At that time we can discuss salary and answer any questions you may have.

We at Timber Ridge combine many years of summer camping experience with a love for campers, counselors, adventure and out-doors. Our facilities are modern, well kept, and bear the very best equipment. For this, we are proud to say that nearly 50% of our staff returns year after year. There is no better place to learn... to grow... to cultivate friendships and to look back on the summer with a fondness for our campers and our camps. Come see for yourself...
